IELTS vs TOEFL

For many years TOEFL has been the go to exam for students aspiring to go to USA for higher studies. Introduction of IELTS changed that.

With a direct testing for speaking, IELTS has given more practical results, which the institutions can consider as more reliable. IELTS’s personalized testing has bben appreciated widely. Since introduction, around 3000 US schools are currently accepting IELTS for english language test.

But TOEFL has been introduced as TOEFL iBT, which now includes recorded speech portion. Sharp number raising has been since TOEFL iBT has been reintroduced. TOEFL iBT is accepted now worldwide, especially in the US. Many top colleges still prefer TOEFL score over the IELTS and a majority of them accept both.

So which test one should take?

Usually, it’s one question that can be answered only upon taking into consideration of all the factors. For majority of US schools and Universities a higher GRE/GMAT score supplemented by either TOEFL or IELTS is good. But top schools prefer TOEFL over IELTS.

Countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand prefer IELTS over TOEFL and generally most Universities do not require a GRE/GMAT score.

Ultimately the choice of test comes down to the details like course you want to pursue and University preference for either of tests.
